Chief Executive Officer
Mike's career started as an aircraft engineer and maintenance planner in the airline industry in 1990. He joined Denel Aviation in 2000 as a Planning Engineer and progressed until promotion to Chief Operating Officer in 2008 before his appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 2010.
With a Master's degree in Aeronautical Maintenance and Production from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Constructions Aéronautiques (ENSICA and now ISAE) in Toulouse, France. Mike has overseen rapid growth in the company's activities and business in aviation markets across Africa and South America.
In addition to his engineering qualifications from ENSICA and the UK Air Technical College and the City and Guilds of London Institute, he also completed the Executive Leadership Programme at the University of South Africa's Graduate School of Business Leadership.
Deputy CEO & Chief Financial Officer
With over 20 years of experience in finance, Abdul Carim, a qualified CA, started working as an audit clerk in 1989.
He holds a B Comm, B Acc and is a member of South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
He joined Denel Aviation in 2008 as CFO and also assists the CEO and fellow executives in formulating and implementing strategic plans for the organisation.
Executive Manager: Legal & Compliance Services
Khalatse has extensive experience in executive management in the field of Aviation Management from an Economic Regulatory, Safety and Security Regulatory and Maintenance Repair Organisation perspectives, Legal Services, Human Resources and Company Secretariat Services and in the review and drafting of Aviation Legislation and its application and enforcement. He has worked for various Blue Chip Companies, including SASOL (PTY) LTD,ESKOM, ACSA, SACAA and Polokwane International Airport in various fields covering Procurement Services, Legal Advisory Services, Airport Management, Civil Aviation Regulatory Services. He holds B Proc and LLB degrees from the Universities of the North (UNIN) and Witwatersrand (WITS) respectively.
Executive Manager: Human Capital & Development
Sithembile's career in Human Resources Management started 14 years ago when she took her first job as an Employee Services Facilitator at Afrox (Pty) Ltd. She developed her career path in the skills development arena up to Training Manager in a consulting environment, at Accenture before she decided to broaden her spectrum into a generalist Human Resources Management career path for corporates like Janssen-Cilag, Fintech (Pty) Ltd and Letsema Consulting.
Sithembile holds an Honours degree in Social Sciences, a postgraduate diploma in Human Resources Management and is certified in a Leadership Programme for People Managers.
Hugh M. Petersen
Executive Manager: Business Development
Hugh is a professional engineer with more than 17 years’ experience in the aviation, defence, technology and energy environments. Following experience in the United Kingdom, Swaziland, Tanzania and Kenya he joined Denel Dynamics, a division in the Denel group in 2001 as marketing executive. In 2005 he was appointed manager of the Strategic Engineering Group at Denel Aerospace Systems with responsibilities for Research and Development and strategy formulation. Mr Petersen holds a Masters Degree in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) from the University of Johannesburg and a post-graduate Certificate in Integrated Logistics Support from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom.
Executive Manager: Engineering & Flight Test Operations
Shalan has a collective 19 years defence related experience having commenced his career in 1996 as an Engineer at Armscor and over the 11 years progressed to Mechanical Systems Engineer and Programme Manager. He joined Denel Aviation in 2007 as the Executive Manager Quality and in 2011 was transferred to the position of Executive Manager Engineering & Flight Operations.
Shalan is a registered professional engineer with ECSA and has attained a Specialised Masters in Aviation Safety, BSc Eng (Mech), Certificate in Programme Management and Certificate in Denel Executive Leadership Development Programme.
Executive Manager: MRO Operations
Dean started his career in aviation as an apprentice aircraft engines and airframe fitter almost 20 years ago in the General Aviation industry. He has gained a considerable amount of experience in the area of aircraft maintenance & management particularly in the civil commercial airline sector having spent some time with South African Airlink Airlines as well as South African Express Airways both located at OR Tambo International Airport . In the midst of this, he has gained a considerable amount of experience in the civil aviation regulatory and certification environment having spent more than 10 years with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) where his last assignment was as Senior Manager responsible for Aircraft Airworthiness and Aircraft Maintenance Organisation compliance.
He completed a Masters Degree in Aviation Safety specialising in Aircraft Airworthiness from Ecole Nationale De LAviation Civile (ENAC-France) and his thesis subject was Safety Management Systems Methodology for Aeronautical Operators. He also holds Diplomas in Aircraft engines & Airframes Maintenance and Senior Civil Aviation Management, an Aircraft Maintenance Engineers licence (AME) from the SACAA, various management training certificates and on the verge of obtaining a Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) with Regenesys Business School- Sandton, Johannesburg.
Albert van Oldenmark
Executive Manager: Fixed Wing Tactical MRO
Albert's career in Aviation started 40 years ago. He has been involved in Design and Development, Aircraft Modification and Upgrades, Production, Aircraft Assembly, Aircraft and component maintenance, Aircraft Support Logistics definition and establishment, Marketing, Business Development, Project/Programme management. He has secured major contracts and has managed facilities and major programmes for local and foreign Customers.
He started his career as an apprentice, obtained a trade, a higher National Diploma, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) Degree at the University of Pretoria. He further complemented his portfolio with Financial and Marketing courses.
Head of Quality
Pfumelani's career in civil and military aviation spans more than 10 years having started at the South African Civil Aviation Authority where she served in engineering, certification and management positions.
She is a qualified Aeronautical Engineer from Wits University and supplemented her technical degree with a management qualification at Wits Business school.
